Brunei's King expresses support for President Duterte's war on drugs

President Duterte has just found a new ally in his war on drugs.

Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah has expressed his support for Duterte's war against illegal drugs, Foreign Secretary Jun Yasay announced on Monday.

Yasay divulged that the war on drugs was one of the myriad of issues that were discussed during the bilateral talks between the two leaders.

Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah hosted welcome ceremonies for President Duterte at the Istana Nurul Iman.

Duterte has been straight forward on his pronouncements with regards to his policies against illegal drugs and criminality in general. Duterte also hopes that Philippines' neighboring coutries, ASEAN countries most especially, will follow suit.

Indonesia and Thailand among others, have both hailed the Philippines' effort to curb down, if not totally eradicate, illegal drugs in the Philippines.

Duterte arrived in Brunei on the night of October 16 and was given a 21-gun salute the next day in a ceremony led by Sultan Bolkiah.

On Monday, Bolkiah hosted a dinner for Duterte and his entourage consisted by Yasay, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, Peace Process Adviser Jesus Dureza and Press Secretary Martin Andanar.

Duterte also met with thousands of Filipinos at the Hassan Bolkiah National Sports Complex on Sunday after his arrival.

In a report by The PhilStar, President Duterte was said his willingness to open the Philippines for more investments from Brunei.
Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said the President expressed to Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, in the bilateral meeting yesterday afternoon at the Istana Nurul Iman, that the country welcomes more investments from this oil-rich country.

His arrival here also marked the 32 years since bilateral relations have been formally established between the Philippines and Brunei.

“On trade and investments, we had very good discussion with respect also to encouraging investments in our country,” Lopez said.

He stressed that the Philippines is considered to be among the fast-growing economies in the world which Brunei investors could look into.
