Forbes Magazine lists Duterte among World's Most Powerful

Unlike other Filipino politicians, President Duterte doesn't have to make up his own award body just to gain recognition.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has made it to this year's World's Most Powerful People list of world-renowned Forbes Magazine. Duterte was named one of the Forbes Magazine’s Most Powerful People of 2016.

Duterte joined 73 other leaders, advocates and entrepreneurs who represent various sectors in the roster. He was listed 70th of the 74 Most Powerful People of international business magazine.

The list, which went online on December 14, 2016, listed Duterte as the 70th most powerful person in the world.

"The former mayor of Davao City was elected president of the Philippines in May 2016," Forbes wrote.

"In October, Duterte announced a "separation" from a century-long strategic alliance with United States, and plans to realign the Philippines towards China," it added.

"Duterte's tendency to say what he thinks, no matter how raw, also keeps him in the headlines: He's referred to US President Barack Obama as a 'son of a whore' and used homophobic slurs to describe political opponents," Duterte's profile stated.

Dutere ranks above al-Qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahiri (71st), Las Vegas Sands' Sheldon Adelson (72nd), Founders Fund's Peter Thiels (73rd), and US Senator Chuck Schumer (74th).

According to Forbes, “Forbes’ list this year of The World's Most Powerful People reflects rapid and profound change happening around the globe. The biggest trend this year is likely the rise to power of Donald Trump, as well as the increasing power of his supporters and allies,” says Forbes Contributing Editor David Ewalt.
