Hacienda Luisita: Duped T'Bolis from Mindanao only get P250 weekly instead of the promised P500 daily wage - by Noah Luchansky

In a Facebook post, Philippine Graphic Editor in Chief Joel Pablo Salud detailed the heart-breaking story of T'Bolis from South Cotabato who were allegedly duped into working at Hacienda Luisita. They are currently in Quezon City - stranded.

They aim to seek help from the government for their unfortunate situation.

According to the Facebook post, the natives were hired with a promise of 500 pesos daily wage, but when they started working they were only paid "a measly P250 to P300 PER WEEK."

"A photo of T'Bolis from South Cotabato who are now stranded in QC. Sent by an FB friend. Their story is heartbreaking. They were recruited to work for Hacienda Luisita with a promised salary of P500/day. Upon arriving there and working, they were paid only a measly P250 to P300 PER WEEK.

They sought the help of barangay officials in Tarlac who told them to make a trip to Metro Manila and find a way to contact officials of Camp Aguinaldo for a C-130 trip back home. They were able to reach Nepa Q-Mart, after which they walked all the way to Camp Aguinaldo. Arriving at the gates of the camp, they weren't allowed entry. With nary the money to spare for food and lodging, they stayed and slept along the line of stores nearby for several days.

The freezing weather the past couple of weeks made it really difficult for them. My friend on FB got wind of their story and opened his home for the IPs. For several days, despite humble resources, he and his girlfriend pitched in to feed the IPs. He got in touch with me so I could reach Sec. Judy Taguiwalo of DSWD.

I sent a message to my friend and fellow author Ina Alleco Roldan Silverio who immediately responded to the call for help. These IPs will be brought to DSWD Central Office tomorrow for processing and the trip back home. The IPs have several requests. They said there are still several IPs working under slave conditions at Hacienda Luisita. An elderly T'Boli allegedly died, and some are said to have been beaten.

This should be investigated with fierce resolve. This is a serious case of human trafficking."

UPDATE:
According to Inday Varona, this is now being investigated by the Labor Department.
