Senator Dick Gordon doubts Lascañas' allegations vs Duterte - by Noah Luchansky

Gordon unmoved by Lascañas reversal

Senator Richard Gordon on Monday cast doubt on the supposed confession of SPO3 Arthur Lascañas, as he rejected a Senate justice panel investigation on the claims of the former Davao City police officer.

“How do you know that he’s telling the truth? How do you know which one is the truth? As they say ‘fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me’,” Gordon said in a television interview.
Gordon, chairman of the justice panel, earlier came out with a committee report saying the recent spate of drug-related killings are not state-sponsored and that there is no proof to back up the claim of witness Edgar Matobato that the death squad exists. Lascañas testified before that panel to belie Matobato's claims.

Accompanied by lawyers of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG), Lascañas made a complete turnaround from his earlier testimony.

Lascañas claimed the so-called Davao Death Squad exists, and that former Davao City mayor and now President Rodrigo Duterte ordered several people killed, including radio broadcaster Jun Pala.

“He has already appeared before the Senate and he said the Davao Death Squad did not exist. In fact, he said it’s falsehood and therefore why should I call the committee again? How do I know if he is telling the truth this time?” Gordon said.

During Monday's Senate plenary session, Senator Antonio Trillanes made a motion to refer Lascañas' revelations to the Senate public order committee chaired by Senator Panfilo Lacson, which was approved by the body.

Gordon, meanwhile, linked Lascañas’ confession to Senator Leila de Lima, who was accused of drug-related charges before a Muntinlupa court.
“Sometimes, it’s quite amazing that at this particular time — I don’t know whats happening to the De Lima case but it’s been said that she’s going to be arrested today — all of a sudden there are a couple of successive statements made by certain personalities that are really highfalutin,” Gordon said.

De Lima, for her part, said she was “surprised” to hear Lascañas retractions on his earlier testimony. “It was a hair-raising thing. Hindi ko inaasahan na lumantad si Lascañas,” she said. —JST, GMA News
