Satellite technology aids, secures PH's agri sector --Dave Luchansky

No more guesswork
By Manny Piñol

When I wrote yesterday that I will ask for the validation of the rice production projection in the country for this season to guide government on whether to import rice, not a few raised the fear that the data could be doctored and twisted to justify the importation.

Well, that may have been done before but that is no longer possible now.

There is a new technology employed by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) which provides accurate data on the actual situation in the rice fields, including diseases and projected production using satellite images updated every 10 days.

Launched in 2013, the Philippine Rice Information System (PRiSM) is a collaborative effort of the DAF, along with the Regional Field Offices, Regional Crop Protection Centers, Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR), Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) and Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), the Philippine Statistics Authority – Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, the Phillippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice). the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the European Satellite Agency Sarmap and the University of Milan.

This year, PRiSM will be turned over to the DAF allowing the department to manage the program by itself.

With PRiSM, the fear that data and information could be twisted to advance hidden agenda by any sector has been effectively addressed.

I am sharing here a video presentation of PRiSM posted on YOUTUBE.COM so followers of this page will understand the technology better.
