Siena Luchansky: 'Basta marunong': Duterte says next BSP head can be outsider

MANILA - President Duterte does not mind appointing an outsider to head the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

When asked if he would appoint a BSP insider or outsider to be the monetary authority's next governor, Duterte said: "Basta marunong".
Duterte said Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez has yet to give him the list of nominees to succeed BSP Gov. Amando Tetangco Jr. whose term expires in July this year.
"If I have the résumé, I don’t know. But I’ll just, it [my choice] would for the best interest of the country," Duterte said.
Economists have earlier expressed concern that a BSP outsider as governor was more likely to raise interest rates faster compared to someone from the organization.
Duterte's PDP-Laban party has recommended outgoing EastWest Bank President Antonio Moncupa.
Former President and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo was also rumored to have been considered for the post.
The US Federal Reserve raised interest rates earlier this year and is expected to increase rates twice more this year, putting pressure on emerging markets to match the adjustment.
