Could Turkey and Mongolia join the ASEAN alliance? Yes, according to a columnist

After President Duterte earlier today revealed that Turkey and Mongolia had asked him to sponsor their membership into the ASEAN alliance, a debate whether it's actually feasible immediately ensued.
For the pathetic die hard yellow zombies, Duterte has lost his sanity. For the people who are really in the know, aka the experts, it is actually possible for a country to join the ASEAN alliance even if they are not geographically located in the southeast asia region.

Here's an explanation from Tonyo Cruz, a columnist at Manila Bulletin, one of the country's leading newspaper.

Questions and exchanges from the comments section of his posts:

Q: but turkey says it does not want to be just a dialog partner
A: Tonyo Cruz: Turkey has to adjust to the rules of ASEAN. Di naman ASEAN ang magaadjust.

**Ralph K. Vega: Some people has to understand that ASEAN is not just a geographical association; it is an economic cooperation that is moving to be an economic bloc.

Q: But Duterte said Suu Kyi corrected him, questioning if he considered geography. And then Duterte said that Turkey is between Europe and Asia buy sometimes it is said to be part of Asia.
What are the chances that he was interchanging "Asian" and "ASEAN" like he did with Benham Rise and WPS?
A: Tonyo Cruz: Then folks should also argue and question against Russia, US, Australia, India, Japan and other non-Southeast Asian countries participating in ASEAN+ and ASEAN++ arrangements.

**Tonyo Cruz I saw the former PCSPO Usec. tweeting about Duterte supposedly being ignorant about SEA geography. Quite impossible he doesn't know about Russia, US, Australia, South Korea and India as ASEAN+.

Such malice.

Q: ASEAN+3 and ASEAN+EAS doesn't make the other countries signatories to the ASEAN charter. It doesn't obligate them to the single market.
A: There's no single market. There's a community being built, but no single market.

**That's how I understood it. Turkey will be like China, SoKor, US, India and others. Turkey as an emerging major economy is very much welcome in exploring its options with ASEAN. I hope other emerging powers like Mexico and South Africa can join in as well.
