Duterte says AFP chief Año is next DILG secretary

President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday announced that Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Eduardo Año will be his next secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Duterte presented Año during his pre-departure media conference at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The president was leaving for Cambodia, Hong Kong and China for a series of state visits.

"You are now facing the next DILG secretary," Duterte told media men while presenting Año.

Año, who said Duterte's announcement caught him by surprise, is set to retire in October.

The DILG secretary post was vacated after Duterte fired Ismael Sueno last month over corruption allegations.

A member of the Philippine Military Academy Matikas Class of '83, Año said as DILG chief, he will "do [his] best to be able to contribute" in solving the country's many problems.

"He was implicated in the abduction of [missing activist] Jonas Burgos and was accused of human rights violations in the course of counter-insurgency operations," said Bayan Secretary General Renato Reyes in a statement issued shortly after Duterte made the announcement.

Reyes also said Año's appointment "points to a very disturbing trend of militarizing the bureaucracy," especially as it came in the heels of former Armed Forces chief Roy Cimatu's appointment to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Welcome development

Año, however, found an ally with Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a former Navy officer who said Año's appointment to the DILG is a "welcome development."

"His numerous accomplishments as a military officer are true measures of his leadership, character and competence which are much needed for his new assignment," said Trillanes in a text message. —KBK, GMA News
