Camiguin tourism ad proves that 'sex sells' isn't the only way to do it

Just in time for the annual Lanzones Festival (October 22-31), the Camiguin Tourism Office just launched their No Words tourism video - an ad that captured the hearts of many Filipinos.

Veering off from the usual bikini-clad travel videos, the ad offers a much needed respite from tourism stereotypes.

Sex in advertising is the use of sex appeal in advertising to help sell a particular product or service. Sexually appealing imagery may or may not pertain to the product or service in question. Examples of sexually appealing imagery include nudity, pin-up models, and muscular men.

Axiom "sex sells" is often said as a shorthand to encapsulate this phenomenon.

Camiguin is an island in Mindanao, Philippines. Dubbed as the “Island Born of Fire”, this small and simple island never fails to amaze both its locals and tourists, leaving them “no words” to describe their experience in the place.

The ad received a warm reception from netizens and earned high praises for its originality and truthfulness.

"Salamat naman at hindi kayo nag-fall sa trap ng isang sexy at bikini-clad na turista. Salamat for breaking the stereotypes. Mas makaka-relate ang majority ng mga local tourists just for that. All else, cinematography, concept, script, even the metaphor of "No Words" you used to sum it all, ang galing. Congrats!"

" I’ve seen a lot of commercial videos about tourism but this is by far THE BEST. The concept, the execution and the not-the-mainstream-perfect-model-tourist featured in the video (which I really love!). Well done! Hands up to the one/team who conceptualized this."
