Local execs face audit after Duterte laments crime rate

The Department of the Interior and Local Government on Wednesday said it has started an audit of local officials who are not doing well in the campaign against crime and illegal drugs.
This, after President Rodrigo Duterte lamented the country's latest crime rate and the supposed “nonchalant” attitude of local government units in fighting crime.

The DILG is collating citizen complaints against governors, mayors and barangay chairmen, Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año told radio DZMM.

The agency, he said, will also seek the help of state auditors to look into how local executives have been using their intelligence funds.

Año said he also issued a warning that mayors will face suspension if they are "missing in action" during natural disasters.
