WATCH: CCTV footage of Tanauan Mayor Halili's assassination

WATCH: CCTV footage from the Tanauan City Hall, showing the actual shooting of Mayor Antonio Halili.

Tanauan City, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili was shot dead Monday morning, July 2, during the weekly flag raising ceremony in front of city hall.

Halili was rushed to the C.P. Reyes Medical Center where he was declared dead at 8:45 am, Calabarzon police director Chief Superintendent Edward Carranza said. He succumbed to the gunshot wound on his chest.

Police are still trying to pin down the motive for Halili's killing. Carranza has formed a special investigation task group (SITG) to look into the Halili's killing.

In a Facebook video posted by Tanauan City Public Information Officer Gerard Laresma, the sound of a gunshot was heard towards the end of the singing of the national anthem.

Halili gained notoriety for implementing a “walk of shame” for drug suspects back in 2016 when he paraded drug personalities for all people to see. It was slammed by the Commission on Human Rights because parading suspects is unconstitutional.

Just like President Duterte, the mayor was known for his hard stance against illegal drugs.

It seems like the drug cartels are now intensifying their resistance against the government's effort to eradicate illicit drugs.
