Duterte slams opposition Senate slate: 'Otso Diretso papuntang impiyerno'
President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday slammed the opposition senatorial slate as he continued his tour around the country to campaign for his preferred candidates in the May midterm elections.

Backed by Vice President Leni Robredo, the opposition Otso Diretso slate is composed of Senator Bam Aquino, Magdalo party-list Representative Gary Alejano, former Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II and former Quezon Representative Erin Tañada.

Former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay, Marawi civic leader Samira Gutoc, human rights lawyer Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno and election lawyer Romulo Macalintal completed the eight-man ticket.

It was the first time that Duterte hit out at the Otso Diretso slate during the campaign trail.

Speaking at a PDP-Laban rally in Zamboanga City, Duterte said the opposition did nothing but to criticize him and his policies.

“Sinong ipalit mo diyan sa ‘yang ‘Otso Diretso’ papuntang impiyerno? Totoo lang, hindi ako na-ano. Walang ginawa ‘yang mga tao na ‘yan puro criticize, hindi pa maniwala,” he said.

Duterte claimed Tañada, a member of the Liberal Party, was a leftist.

“Erin Tañada? Left. And proud sila diyan sa left. They think that it’s popular. Kita mo kakapal ng mukha, nagawa pa ng ticket Otso Diretso?” the President said.

He questioned Roxas’ track record in public service and called him a braggart.

“Mar Roxas. Susmaryosep.

The President also accused Roxas of political turncoatism. Roxas was Trade secretary during the Estrada administration, topped the senatorial race in 2004 under the ticket of then-President and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and served as Transportation and Interior secretary under then-President Benigno Aquino III.

“Nadaanan man niya lahat 'yan. Tapos porma. Ano ang nagawa niya? Bigyan mo ako isa. Maski isa lang,” he said.

Duterte said Bam Aquino only had an uncanny resemblance to his uncle, former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. The President also raised questions on Aquino’s legislative record.

“Bam Aquino. Alam mo maski ano ka, Bam, malayo ka sa... Kamukha ka lang. Pero ‘yung...Ano bang significant na nagawa mo? What have you done that is really impressive? Puro kayo oposisyon, puro kayo saway,” he said.

The President called out Alejano for his role in the unsuccessful mutinies led by then-Navy officer and now Senator Antonio Trillanes IV against the Arroyo administration. He said Alejano, who once pushed for the chief executive’s impeachment, made no sense in his statements.

“Alejano, walang sense talaga magsalita. Marunong mag-English kasi PMAer [Philippine Military Academy graduate] eh,” he said.

Duterte said Diokno was no match to the eloquence of his father, the late former Senator Jose W. Diokno.

“Kalayo niya sa tatay niya. 'Yung si W. Diokno. 'Yun ang kuyaw. Pero ito, wala ito. Tignan mo magsalita. Wala. Walang ka ano. Maski mag-istorya siguro ito ng impyerno, masusunog kami doon. Kawawa naman kami kung... Hindi mo madala ang gobyerno,” he said.

As for Macalintal, the President said: “Abugado ka lang kung may pera ka. Papasok diyan wala kang pera.”

Duterte took pride in the qualifications of senatorial aspirant Francis Tolentino as compared to Tañada and Hilbay, the former top government lawyer who is among the fiercest critics of the administration’s policy on the South China Sea dispute.

Duterte, however, declined to speak negatively about Gutoc, the only woman in the slate who is a critic of Duterte’s imposition of martial law in Mindanao as a result of the Marawi siege in 2017.

“Si Samira, babae man 'yan, ayaw ko magsalita diyan. Eh ganun 'yan ang rule eh pagka-babae kalaban mo, you just shut up. Samira Ali Gutoc. So I have nothing to say to you, ma'am,” he said.
