End of an era! Estrada-Ejercito political clan collapse in 2019

End of an era for Estrada-Ejercito political clan
MANILA - Did the May 13 midterm elections signal the end of Estrada-Ejercito political clan?

The clan's patriarch, former president Joseph "Erap" Estrada, has failed in his bid for a last term as Manila City mayor.

He was defeated by former Manila City vice mayor Isko Moreno by a wide margin, based on the latest unofficial tally by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Moreno garnered 345,774 votes against Estrada with 202,699 votes with over 96.87 percent of the votes canvassed as of 3:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Along Erap's downfall, came the failed bids of granddaughter Janella Ejercito Estrada in San Juan City's mayorship and nephew ER Ejercito in Laguna's gubernatorial post.

Janella, daughter of senatorial candidate Jinggoy Estrada, was defeated by Francis Zamora, whose family used to be allied with the Estrada-Ejercito clan.

Janella was short of more than 10,000 votes to take the post, which could have continued her clan's hold of the city for 5 decades.

Meanwhile, ER suffered a heavy defeat in his bid for governor in Laguna. His competitor, reelectionist Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez, came first with a lead of more than 400,000 votes.

ER's son John Paul also lost in Pagsanjan's mayorship. ER's wife Girlie secured the vice mayor post in Pagsanjan with a lead of less than 2,000 votes.

Erap's 2 sons, JV Ejercito and Jinggoy Estrada, are hanging by a thread in their bids for a seat in the Senate.

They are both outside the winning circle, based on 92.43 percent of election returns of clustered precincts as of 3:50 a.m. Tuesday.

JV was in 13th place with 13,632,195 votes while Jinggoy was in 15th spot with 10,818,797 votes.
