Subway era! Tunnel Boring Machine arrives in PH

The cutter head of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Metro Manila Subway Project has arrived and puts to rest the apprehension and doubt in the minds of those who initially disbelieved the project could even begin.
This was learned from Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade himself who told the Daily Tribune on Wednesday that work on the 28.3-kilometer tunnel should soon begin in earnest with the arrival of the head of the machine that makes tunneling quick, safe and cost-effective.

Malacanang and Tugade earlier had to contend with doubters who kept saying the government project “can never be done” and that such a project was just “a dream”.

The 28.3-kilometer subway line would cost nearly P357 billion to construct and will initially have three stations operational by 2022 although the project broke ground only in February this year.

The initial line will run from Mindanao Avenue to Tandang Sora and finally to North Avenue under a schedule worked out by the joint partners Shimizu Corp, Fujita Corp, Takenaka Civil Engineering Co. Ltd. and EEI Corp.

Also, one of the more critical infrastructure projects President Duterte vowed to complete before his term ends has been accelerated to the fourth quarter next year instead of in 2022.

Tugade told the Daily Tribune on Wednesday the 38-kilometer North-South Railway Project (NSRP) could be done in record time without sacrificing quality.

According to him, D.M. Consunji Inc. president and chief executive officer Jorge Consunji and his project construction partners at Taisei Corp. committed to advance the completion of the project no later than the fourth quarter of 2021 instead of 2022 when President Duterte’s term ends.

Phase 1 of the NSRP pertains to the 38-kilometer railway line running from Tutuban Station in Manila to Malolos in Bulacan, seen to abbreviate the current commuting time of many hours to more or less 30 minutes when completed.

The NSRP will eventually extend 109 kilometers more to Clark in Pampanga.
