Higit 200 na tricycle drivers sa Mandaluyong, nagpositibo sa COVID-19

  • Over 200 tricycle drivers in Mandaluyong tested positive for COVID-19
  • Mandaluyong City Mayor Menchie Abalos said they still cannot determine how the infection was transmitted
  • Drivers are required to secure a certification that they tested negative for COVID-19 before they could ply their routes again
The local government of Mandaluyong conducted a rapid diagnostic testing to over 4,000 drivers and 200 tested positive, as confirmed by the city public information office.

As Metro Manila eased to a modified enhanced community quarantine, the COVID-19 testing was conducted before allowing the tricycle drivers to resume operations. Drivers are required to secure a certification that they tested negative for COVID-19 before they can ply their routes again.

Mandaluyong City Mayor Menchie Abalos said they are puzzled and still cannot determine how the over 200 tricycle drivers got infected with COVID-19.

“Hindi mo ma-trace kung sasabihin mo na nahawa kung kanino kasi nga random ‘yung aming ano eh. Iba-ibang barangays itong mga drivers na ‘to eh kaya ‘di namin masabi kung nahawa kung kanino,” Abalos said on GMA’s Unang Hirit.

She said the drivers were not allowed to resume their operations.

“Kapag nagpositive sila sa rapid test, automatic ‘yan ipapa-swab natin, ‘yung PCR. Then, automatic din na i-isolate na namin sila and then of course, ‘yung kayang magpa-isolate sa bahay, home quarantine, o hindi kaya nilalagay namin sa isang gym or sa isang school namin…” Abalos added.

Under the “new normal”, tricycle drivers are allowed to take only one passenger at a time to practice social distancing. They are also required to place plastic in their units to protect not only themselves, but also their passengers.

Tricycle drivers must always wear a face mask and gloves. A disinfectant, alcohol, and log book must always be available in their tricycle. For the payment, a drop box is placed for passengers to drop their exact fare.
