Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said on Saturday (May 9) that he is mulling filing cyberlibel charges against those who have maligned him, his family, and employees online when he tested positive for COVID-19.

In an interview on DWIZ radio, Pimentel said his office is now tracing the individuals who made up and spread “negative” stories about him.

Pimentel, who recently recovered from COVID-19, said it was not only him who felt discriminated against, but also his wife, drivers, and security personnel, as well as their families, who have not contracted the disease.

(There really are people who have ill motives and black hearts. Imagine, they made up stories about my driver and even their families, and spread rumors about them online. We are now tracing these people, because this is a crime under the Cybercrime Prevention Act and the Bayanihan to Heal as One Law.)

“Kaming mga nag-COVID positive, second life na namin ito, so sa second life natin, ito na lang siguro yong additional contribution natin sa lipunan: ‘Yong mga maiitim ang puso i-expose na rin natin, habulin na rin natin yang mga ‘yan,” he added.

(We who have been COVID-19-positive consider this our second life, so maybe, in our second life, this can be our contribution to society: to expose black-hearted people and go after them.)

Pimentel mentioned possibly tapping technology experts to help him go after those who slandered him. While noting that the Philippines is a democratic country, Pimentel, a lawyer, said “we have laws [to follow].”

(If the people think there were laws broken [on my part], then they should file a complaint. Not just make a general complaint that looks like it’s for publicity. If it’s a legal action, we’ll face it on legal grounds. But if it’s political that’s masked as legal, then it’s up to the people.)

On the other hand, he thanked the doctors and people who showed him and his wife “compassion” during their ordeal.

Pimentel earlier drew flak for breaching his quarantine and accompanying his pregnant wife to Makati Medical Center last March 24. He knew he was COVID-19 on the same day.

He is now facing complaints for supposedly violating Republic Act No. 11332 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Disease and Health Events Act.

Pimentel maintained that he will face the charges.
